Haruomi Hosono and Makoto Kabuto tackle New Orleans/Cajun music. It doesn’t necessarily make sense at first glance; but once the needle drops, it definitely does make sense. It is full of solid grooves and performances.
Hosono’s ability to shift between genres is legendary and this is yet another excellent example. But, as you may expect, this isn’t a carbon copy. This is an LP that keeps the listener on their toes and subverts expectations.
It starts “Night Shade,” a jam that is a clear declaration of the style of this LP. But it never stays neatly in one lane. Japanese lyrics and Hosono covering his own songs ensures that the listener is never bored or forget that they’re listening to a very unique project.
It stands to reason then that it was recorded in Tokyo, LA and Louisiana, with both Japanese and American musicians. This is a 2021 reissue from Japanese Record Store Day 2021, it was originally released in 1999.
